Delhi
India's third city, Delhi owes its development to its location as a strategic crossroads, a road and then a railway junction. On the banks of the Yamuna River, the agglomeration juxtaposes the recent capital (1911) of New Delhi and extensive suburbs to Old Delhi. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is located 23 km south of the city.
Agra
City located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is home to the iconic Tāj Mahal, a mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shâh Jahân in memory of his wife Mumtâz Mahal. The main building, topped with a majestic dome, was carved from white marble and encrusted with precious stones. Erected at the bottom of a courtyard at the four corners of which stand minarets, this building is reflected in the central basin.
Jaipur, The Pink City
It is the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan. It recalls the time when the region was governed by the royal family who founded today's old town or "pink town" in 1727, due to the characteristic color of its buildings. At the center of its imposing network of streets stands the opulent City Palace. Part of this complex of colonnaded buildings with gardens, courtyards and museums remains a royal residence.
Jodhpur, The Blue City
Located in the state of Rajasthan at the gateway to the Thar Desert, in the northwest of India. Mehrangarh Fort, built in the 15th century, is a former palace which now houses a museum displaying weapons, paintings and royal palanquins. Built on a rocky outcrop, the fort overlooks the fortified city with its many buildings painted blue, the emblematic color of the city.
Jaisalmer, The City of Gold
Jaisalmer has been a walled city since its foundation. It was in the 16th century that the city began to expand at the foot of the fortress. Currently, a small part of the Jaisalmeris live in the fortress, while the majority live in the surrounding area. Jaisalmer would be with Carcassonne, in France, one of the world's few widely inhabited fortified cities.
Udaipur
Former capital of the Kingdom of Mewar, Udaipur is a city in the state of Rajasthan, in western India. Founded by Maharaja Udai Singh II in 1559, it is located around several artificial lakes and owes its reputation to its sumptuous royal residences. Overlooking Lake Pichola, the City Palace is a complex of 11 palaces with courtyards and gardens, known for its finely crafted mosaics depicting peacocks.
Pushkar
Pushkar, also called Pokkar or Pushkaranagaram is a town inIndian state du Rajasthan located 11 km from the town ofAjmer, and a great place of pilgrimage for theHinduism.
Legend has it that the gods released a swan with a lotus in the beak. He had to drop this lotus at the place where Brahma had to carry out a yajna(Hindu ritual). It was at Pushkar that he made this lotus fall. This is why Pushkar is one of the few places in India where is dedicated a temple to the god Brahma. Pushkara means blue lotus.
Bikaner
Former princely capital known for its camel breeding considered to be among the best in the world, Bikaner is an imposing citadel with its narrow streets and its fabulous red sandstone havelis not to be missed.
Junagarh Fort was built between 1589 and 1594 by Raja Rai Singh. It has a 986 m long rampart fortified by 37 bastions. Unlike most Rajput fortresses, Junagarh was not built on a hill but on the plain. It is embellished with Rajput paintings, mirrors, carved marble panels distributed throughout the numerous palaces.
Gwalior
Located in Madhya Pradesh, the state nicknamed the “heart of India”, Gwalior has an unparalleled charm. The rocky hills surrounding the city form a captivating backdrop. The imposing Gwalior Fort, also called the “Gibraltar of India”, overlooks the city. Gwalior is known for its cultural heritage with influences from different dynasties. The melting pot of traditions and cultures is fascinating. Both historical and contemporary art enjoy a certain popularity in the city.
Chittorgarh
Former capital of Mewar, it offers, perched on its cliff and dominating the horizon, one of the most impressive fortresses of Rajasthan. This architectural marvel located 5 km from the city tells the entire history of Mewar, a small Rajput kingdom.
It is located on the banks of the Berach, a sub-tributary of the Chambal.
